Born December 26, 1925 in
Rushville, Indiana. His father, Lawrence, was an Army veteran of World War I, and
his mother, Louise, was a teacher in the Morristown schools.
After graduating from
Morristown High School in 1944, Dwight entered the USMC on June 13, 1944. After
his training at Parris Island and Camp Lejeune, he reported to Camp Pendleton
and left for the Pacific the day before his 19th birthday.
He was stationed at
Guadalcanal until the invasion of Okinawa, Ryukyu Island where he was killed by
a mortar shell while in a fighting hole on April 14, 1945.
WARREN E. LOWE
Born March 29, 1920 in
Hancock County, Indiana, the son of Warren and Mildred Lowe. Warren married
Gwendolyn (Clegg) also of Morristown, Indiana. Gwen’s brother, Robert, was killed
during World War II while serving in the USAF.
Warren enlisted in the USMC on September
9, 1944. After boot camp at Parris Island he left for Camp Pendleton and the
Pacific theatre. He was severely wounded in action against the enemy at Okinawa,
Ryukyu Island. He managed to get ashore unharmed, but was wounded while rescuing
a less fortunate buddy.
After a long hospital stay, he rejoined
his unit and participated in the ceremony at the surrender of the Japanese
forces at Tsingtao, China on October 25, 1945.
Upon his return to Morristown he founded
Soil Service, Inc., which he operated until his retirement. He passed away on
November 2, 2003.
